  • COM-201 Introduction to Mass Communication

    Investigates mass media's influence on modern society including the history, practices, and functions of the press, television, radio, film, advertising, and public relations.

    COM-206 Interpersonal Communication

    Focuses on skill development to improve communication between people in family, work, and social settings by stressing better methods of understanding others and expressing oneself.

    COM-211 Effective Speaking I

    Designed to help individuals speak and listen effectively through the study of public address with particular attention given to issues of content, structure and delivery style. Students are assisted though the development of techniques for handling speaker apprehension, audience analysis, speech preparation and delivery impact. This course is particularly useful in building better communication skills for students in all fields. Critical thinking and listening skills are also stressed.

    COM-212 Effective Speaking II

    An extension of COM-211, this course introduces advanced features of presentation design and delivery. Presentations are videotaped for analysis. Students anticipating careers involving regular presentations such as marketing, public relations, business management, travel and tourism, engineering, as well as other fields are encouraged to consider this course.

    COM-215 Oral Interpretation

    Course stresses the development of skills needed to read literature aloud. Techniques for presenting prose, poetry, and dramatic selections will be studied and performed. A requirement for theater students it is also recommended for students interested in infant/toddler and early childhood education.

    COM-225 Small Group Communication

    Focusing on the development of effective small group decision-making and leadership skills, and stressing better methods of self-expression and understanding others through theoretical and experiential learning Due to the essential nature of the skills taught in this course and the current shift toward "work teams" in the corporate environment this course makes an excellent choice for many students looking to improve their confidence and influence in groups.

    COM-228 Principles of Persuasion

    This course examines the persuasive message elements from campaigns, movements, and popular culture. Emphasis is on the and development of persuasive appeals. A beneficial course for anyone interested in improving their ability to influence and understand the influence of others through critical thinking skills.

    COM-230 Non-Verbal Communication

    Helps the student develop effective non-verbal communication skills through the study of non-verbal communication theory and impression management. Concepts and skills learned through this course can prove especially useful to students entering the "helping" fields such as occupational and physical therapy, nursing, mental health technology, and education

    COM-235 Principles of Interviewing

    Interviewing is recognized as an increasingly valuable skill in our information age. This course focuses on the development of effective interviewing skills from both sides of the desk. Learning emphasis is on key interview types including: informational, problem-solving, appraisal, and employment interviewing. Interviewing skills are important in a variety of fields including social work, human resources and management, nursing and medicine, law enforcement, engineering and journalism, among others.

    COM-245 Intercultural Communication

    Course focuses on communication effectiveness between divergent major contemporary cultures. An important course to consider for anyone who recognizes the impact of a global society and want to improve their communication within that society.

    COM-250 Applied Health Communication

    This course provides an overview and application of communication theories directly impacting today's health care practitioner. Students learn to utilize effective communication skills to enhance understanding and improve relationships between the health care practitioner and clients, patients, and co-workers. A useful course for anyone anticipating involvement in the health care industry either as a provider or consumer.

    Course examines the principles and skills of effective face to face communication in business and professional settings. It offers a survey of on-the-job communication skills that enhance success for individuals and the organization.     COM-286 Public Relations Principles

    Principles and skills of public relations in organizations and society are discussed and practiced in this course through the integration of management principles and organizational communication practices. Especially useful to students interested in pursuing careers in public relations and marketing, among others.

    A survey of the history, current issues and trends of commercial and public broadcasting is offered in this course. Topics include government regulations, philosophy, structure, and the general operation of the broadcasting industry.
