12. Conflict
- Recognize the definition of conflict and that conflict in groups is inevitable
- Understand the origin of conflict including scare resources, diverse backgrounds, and varying orientations to task accomplishment
- Understand how disagreements over facts, goals, methods and values can relate to conflict
- Know and be able to recognize the five styles of conflict management
- Be able to recognize the various types of power including expert, interpersonal linkage, reward and punishment, legitimate, referent, charismatic and avoidance power
- Be able to explain how a person or team might resolve conflict constructively utilizing the table on page 261
- Be able to discuss various responses to power including: compliance, alliance, resistance defiance and self-empowerment (CARDS) as discussed in class
13. Leadership in Small groups
- Recognize what leadership in a group is and how individuals fulfill this role
- Know the difference between Trait, Styles and Situational theories of leadership
- Be familiar with the Managerial Leadership Grid explain by one of our class teams
- Be able to explain the concept of a "leaderless" group
- Recognize three elements of leadership emphasized in our text: vision, credibility, and competence
- Understand the various ways that leaders are chosen in groups (appointed, elected, emergent or shared)
- Know the functions of leadership fulfilled by a leader including meeting facilitation, member empowerment, and conflict management
